What is the Misty Beach PGN Viewer applet?

Misty Beach Forth is a Java applet that takes a chess Portable Game Notation (PGN) file in "reduced export format" and displays a chess board with buttons allowing a viewer to step through the game. The viewer also allows for annotations in the PGN file, but is not a complete PGN viewer. Some examples appear below.

Great care was taken to keep the applet small. The applet requires 46 KB of download using Netscape Navigator (i.e. about 46 seconds with a 14.4 Kbps modem, about 23 seconds with a 28.8 Kbps modem assuming an uncompressed SLIP connection. with a compressed SLIP connection about 20 and 10 seconds). The applet requires about 18 KB of download using Internet Explorer (i.e. about 18 seconds and 9 seconds).

Can I use it on my web page?

Yes, that's the idea. In fact, it is designed to be used by people who do not know Java. Individual, non-commercial use is free. There is a fee for other uses. See Licensing and Downloading for the details on licensing and downloading it.

So I don't need to know Java to use it?

No, you don't. Just like you don't need to know the file format for GIF and JPEG graphics files to use them in your web pages, you don't need to know Java to use the Misty Beach PGN Viewer applet.

You download it from here. That page also contains instructions on how to use it in your own web pages.

What is the current state of Misty Beach PGN Viewer?

The Version is 2.12. The big differences between 2.x and 1.x are: Unfortunately, users of the 1.x version must modify their HTML pages using 1.x to use 2.x. The addition of annotation and games score require more screen area.

Is there a warranty?

No. The applet is provided "as-is". Download and test it before you decide to use it. I will try to fix any bugs found, but I'm not promising to do so.
